Tourismusgemeinschaft Albtal Plus e. V.
Digital expansion of the existing GeoTours in the Albtal through the design and implementation of several mobile guides
October 2025 to March 2026
For the Albtal Plus e. V. tourism association, several existing GeoTours in the Albtal valley have been converted into digital guides. The aim was to adapt the content – which had previously been available mainly in print – for mobile use, thereby creating a modern offering for visitors to the area.
The finished guides can be accessed via a shared landing page and are available in German and English.
The project was based on the existing printed materials relating to the GeoTours. The first step involved reviewing these materials, analysing them in a structured manner and assessing their suitability for digital use. The main focus was on adapting the content, stops and route descriptions so that they could be presented clearly, comprehensibly and in a user-friendly manner on a smartphone.
This was followed by an on-site inspection carried out by TourComm staff. During this, the individual stops were documented photographically, the route was checked and the tours were tested for their practical usability. In this way, existing information could be validated and clarified in several places.
Based on the materials reviewed and verified on site, the content for the web application was compiled and edited. This included the development and optimisation of route descriptions, as well as the selection and post-processing of the images.
In the next step, all content – texts, images and route descriptions – was transferred to the MAQNIFY© CMS. The route descriptions were also converted to audio using text-to-speech technology, so that the guides can also be used by people with hearing impairments.
As part of the project, the GeoTours for Karlsbad (already a pilot in 2024), Bad Herrenalb, Dobel, Ettlingen, Malsch, Marxzell, Straubenhardt and Waldbronn were digitised and brought together on a single platform. This has created a clear and organised way to access multiple tours within a unified structure.
The guides enable users to access information on geological and landscape features directly along the route. By using the guides on a mobile device whilst on site, the existing GeoTour offering is enhanced with a digital dimension that combines orientation, knowledge transfer and independent exploration.
The digital guides have created a service that is tailored to the needs of today’s visitors whilst building on the region’s existing content. The bilingual availability, the audio route descriptions and the practical presentation of the tours make them easy to use directly in the field.
